UMak SOL’s International Law Society holds #YESWPS

Encouraged by patriotism,  with the theme “The Youth: Indispensable Partner to the Defense of the West Philippine Sea”, the University of Makati School of Law International Law Society (ILS) held a remarkable seminar in partnership with the Philippine Navy, National Youth Commission, and National Coast Watch Council. i#YESWPS or Youth Empowerment Seminar for the West Philippine Sea and Other Maritime Security Challenges was held on September 19-26, 2022, in line with the celebration of National Law Week and the Maritime and Archipelagic Nation Awareness Month (MANAMO).

During the opening of the program, Commo Jose Ma Ambrosio Quaitchon Ezpeleta of the Philippine Navy welcomed the guests, participants, and delegates while an inspirational message was delivered by USEC Edmund Tayao, Executive Director of the National Coast Watch Council, the lead agency for MANA MO.

The discussions were divided into three parts The first part about sustainable development and national security was discussed by Prof. Ma. Carmen Ablan Lagman, Ph.D. of De La Salle University, and Prof. Rej Cortez Torrecampo of the National Defense College of the Philippines.

The second part on the history, heritage and existing Laws that strengthen our claim in the West Philippine Sea was discussed by Mr. Patrick John Mansujeto of the Nayong Pilipino Foundation and International Maritime Law Expert, Atty. Jay Batongbacal.

The last part focused on the indispensable role of the youth in the defense of the West Philippine Sea. The discussion was headed and delivered by COL Mike Logico PA(MNSA) and Professor Sheryl Sharima Renomeron Morales, Associate Professor, Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Quezon City.

Participants had the chance to ask questions related to the topics discussed to deepen their understanding of our significant and indispensable role in preserving and protecting our national territory in the West Philippine Sea.

Before closing the program, the ILS and PN thanked the delegates, guests, students, participants, partners, and sponsors such as Democracy.Net.PH and Solanda Enterprises Inc.

The seminar was formally closed by Chairperson Ronald Gian Carlo L. Cardema of the National Youth Commission.
