New Normal Made Easier, Thanks to DICT’s Free Tablet for Herons

Freshmen herons received their free tablets from the University of Makati

MAKATI, Philippines —University of Makati (UMak) students received free and brand new tablets as educational aid for distance learning.

In response to the academic challenges in the new normal, the Makati City Government in partnership with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), initiated the free tablet distribution among the UMak students from different colleges and levels enrolled in the School Year 2022-2023.

Last March 2022, Honorable Makati City Mayor Abby Binay, Vice Mayor Monique Lagdameo and Congressman Luis Campos are among the city government officials who paid a visit to the university and led the ceremonial turnover of the said brand-new tablets.

“Take care of the tablets as if you pay for it ‘cause technically you do, ‘cause it’s taxpayers’ money. So, take care of the tablet, use it properly, use it wisely, and make sure na all the investments that the city government gives to you as the students of the university, you are able to give it back. Serve your city, serve your country, serve your community. That is the only thing that the city government asks you.” advised Mayor Abby Binay, during the said event.

Taking this vital step to effectively facilitate learning and help students bridge the gap in terms of digital access in the new normal, the City Government took the initiative intended to equip the students with the modern digital tools that they can use in their areas of specialization.

Months after the distribution, many students after they have practiced using the gadgets expressed their gratitude with the initiative of the local government. “Masaya and thankful kasi hindi na ako nahirapan pag dating sa gamit pang online class,” expressed by one of the student-recipients.

“The free tablet is very helpful for me, especially in terms of my online classes and academic activities… As a Makatizen, I am very grateful for this kind of project for all students…” said by another student-recipient from College of Arts and Letters. / Written by Jackie Lou Gamba | USMO
