About UMak Library

History

In 1972, Makati Polytechnic Community College (MPCC) and its former library was established at Sen. Gil J. Puyat Avenue, Makati, Metro, Manila where it began its humble collections and resources catering to the community’s information needs. The MPCC changed the name from time to time, finding ways to provide the Makati community with meaningful educational opportunities geared toward the demands of an emerging industrial society. It was operated as a university in 1991 and officially renamed the University of Makati in 2002.

The assigned Library Director helped the Chief Librarian, Prof. Jesusa L. Fader, re-aligned the University Library’s Goals and Objectives. Toward this end, the Main Library, situated on the 2nd Floor of Admin Building, J.P Rizal Extension, West Rembo, Makati City, housed several donated collections from different organizations and well-known foundations to serve its purpose. Meanwhile, in 2019 under Prof. Jennifer J. Laluna’s leadership, Library Director, the University Library has renamed Library Learning Commons through resolution number 2019-359. Prof. Laluna and LLC Team revisited the mission and vision that became a breakthrough for the Library Learning Commons (LLC) concerning library service, space, and collections.

The advent of the Internet and the growing popularity of remote access to information storage have prompted the LLC Team to recalibrate its functions and reinvent its services. Today, the LLC is much closer to achieving its goal of building a 21st-century library having satellite libraries to support the students’ digital information needs amidst pandemics. Throughout its 50 years of existence, the Library Learning Commons has been shaped by moments of innovation, resilience, and perseverance, taking pride in our achievements and unwavering commitment to serve our patrons with exceptional and world-class library service.

Vision and Mission

VISION – The UMAK Library Learning Commons envisions to provide a world-class library learning environment for quality library management and delivery of library programs and services, research and community library extension services with the different sectors of the University for efficiency and effectiveness.

MISSION – The UMAK Library Learning Commons aims to continue providing and maintaining the information currency concerning instruction, research and library community service of the University on knowledge development.

Office Functions

The UMAK Library Learning Commons exists primarily to support the UMAK goals and objectives. Generally, it aims to render committed and updated library services to the UMAK community and to be its partner in the accomplishment of instructional and curricular programs.

Specifically, the LLC aims to:

Instruct the students, faculty, and Umak community in the effective and efficient use of the UMak LLC resources in any form and in a different modality mode of learning.
Support the college’s educational programs by providing appropriate resources and services to the UMAK community.
Deliver quality services by collecting books and other resources comprising periodicals, vertical files, audio-visual (A/V) resources, an electronic resource through subscription, and free open access journals which are relevant to the curricular programs and organizing them for quick access;
Improve access to the collection through its computerized bibliographical services or Integrated Library System (ILS)
Keep pace with the trends brought by information technology through its Internet facilities
Provide innovative physical facilities and equipment that will make possible effective use of electronic resources and A/V resources in coordination with the staff assigned at the A/V resources and Record Section.
Provide a functional and flexible physical space that encourages exploration and collaboration between students, teachers, and a broader community, thus creating a learning hub.
Promote research partnerships within and outside of the UMak community and fill the gaps of the researchers needs and what the LLC provides.
Coordinate with other libraries in the community.
